Several days ago I posted about Preston Brooks, today I read in Politico that leaders of the House of Representatives are concerned about the safety of Democratic members of Congress who voted for Health Care.
It would appear that some adherents of the Tea Party movement are not content to work through the political system, but have decided that by emulating Preston Brooks of South Carolina they will have more success. Their actions undercut their desire to make the political system more responsive to the people and are more in keeping with the actions of Hitler’s Brown Shirts in Post World War I Germany than American democratic principles. To their credit, the leadership of the Tea Party have condemned these actions.
Unfortunately these actions may undermine the Tea Party message more than they help it. Time will tell.
