From today’s Richmond Times Dispatch which begins with this introductory line, “Philip Van Cleave wants every Virginian who has a permit to carry a concealed handgun into a bar to be able to have a drink – or he wants no gun carrier to be able to drink.” Later it adds, “His aim is to force lawmakers to expand the rights of concealed-handgun owners in bars or rescind the current exception that allows law-enforcement officers and commonwealth’s attorneys to carry concealed weapons and consume alcohol.”
I am a gun owner, I believe in the 2nd Amendment, however like all of our rights, it is not absolute. One of the first things I learned when I was taught to shoot is guns and booze don’t mix. I don’t care if you are a cop, a commonwealth attorney, or a citizen with a concealed weapons permit, I don’t want you in a bar packin heat and getting a belly full of booze, then combining it with a little testosterone you got you what my daddy used to call, “the full deal Buena Vista Saturday Night.” (For those who are interested my daddy was Commonwealth Attorney of Buena Vista for four years where Saturday nights involved loggers cuttin and shootin after getting a belly full of moonshine.)
The problem with Gun Rights Advocates is they keep pushing the limit. At some point they are going to go to far and piss off their political supporters and embolden their moderate supporters who will driven away by their extreme views. The Gun Control advocate will savor the moment.
