I have not said anything about the firing of Joe Paterno, but seeing that his days are numbered, I think it is appropriate.
I don’t doubt that Coach Paterno may have failed, but so did Penn State. The University fired him, that was a mistake. He was old man, he was sick, they should have allowed him to leave with dignity they didn’t. Apparently the Penn State Alumni are pissed, they should be, because the trustee were more interested in doing something than having all the information before they acted. Shame on them.
Years ago VMI fired Coach Bob Thalman. They did so after one or two losing seasons. They haven’t had a winning season since. Under Thalman they had many winning seasons and several Southern Conference Championships. They have gone through scores of Head coaches since, they still haven’t had a winning season. Blame the coach rather than looking at the program. The same is true of Penn State, blame the coach rather than looking at the institution.
